Build Overview
Fast, aggressive, and lethal. The Samurai Bleed build stacks blood loss on enemies through rapid katana hits. When the gauge fills, Hemorrhage triggers — removing ~15% of the target's max HP instantly. Stack two procs on a boss and you've ripped 30% of their health bar in seconds, regardless of how much HP they have.
The Samurai Bleed build is widely considered one of the strongest archetypes in all of Elden Ring — not just in the base game, but including Shadow of the Erdtree. It combines the Hemorrhage status effect (which removes a flat percentage of an enemy's maximum HP on trigger) with fast katana attack strings and high Arcane investment to cycle procs at an almost obscene rate.
This is not a passive playstyle. You need to maintain constant pressure — bleed buildup decays if you stop attacking. The build rewards aggressive, read-then-commit play: learn when to get in, stay in, and rip two Hemorrhage procs before the boss can breathe.
Three Primary Build Paths
Best for: New players, early-mid game, learning the build. Dual wield Uchigatana + Uchigatana (or Uchi + Nagakiba) with Blood affinity and Seppuku. Powerstance L1 attacks hit twice simultaneously, doubling bleed buildup per swing.
This is the recommended starting path. You can run this all the way to the final boss with only modest investment.
Best for: Endgame, min-maxed damage, boss shredding. Rivers of Blood's Corpse Piler skill deals fire + physical damage, applies bleed, and hits 5 times in quick succession — even from mid-range. Two activations often equals two Hemorrhage procs on a boss.
Obtained late game (Mountaintops of Giants). This is the top-tier variant once unlocked.
Best for: Players who want excellent reach, PvP viability, and shield-breaking. Nagakiba is the longest katana in the game. With Seppuku and powerstanced with Uchigatana, it has exceptional range advantage. Splits investment between Strength and Dexterity (quality) rather than going heavy Arcane.
Strengths
- Percentage-based Hemorrhage shreds bosses regardless of HP pool
- Fast attack strings mean constant buildup pressure
- Multiple viable weapons at every stage of the game
- Extremely fun, aggressive playstyle with big proc moments
- Scales excellently into Shadow of the Erdtree
- PvP viable with proper read-and-punish timing
Weaknesses
- Buildup decays if you stop attacking — constant pressure required
- Some late-game bosses are immune or highly resistant
- No shield — requires solid dodge timing
- FP-hungry when spamming Corpse Piler
- Rivers of Blood is late-game locked — early game needs patience
Stats
Recommended Class: Samurai. No other starting class matches this for a bleed build. The Samurai starts with the Uchigatana (a bleed-capable weapon), strong Dexterity, and respectable Vigor. The starting Land of Reeds armor is functional, and you have a Longbow for pulling enemies. This is not a close contest.
Level Progression Targets
| Stat | Start (Samurai) | Lv 50 | Lv 100 | Lv 150 (Dex/Arc) | Lv 150 (Quality) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vigor | 12 | 30 | 30 | 50 | 60 |
| Mind | 11 | 12 | 20 | 30 | 15 |
| Endurance | 13 | 18 | 20 | 18 | 30 |
| Strength | 12 | 12 | 12 | 12 | 50 |
| Dexterity | 15 | 30 | 40 | 48* | 25 |
| Intelligence | 9 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 9 |
| Faith | 8 | 8 | 8 | 15 | 15 |
| Arcane | 8 | 12–15 | 40 | 50 | 12 |
*Dex/Arc path: 48 Dexterity becomes effectively 51 when wearing Okina Mask (+3 Dex). Quality path runs low Arcane and high Str/Vig instead.
Stat Priority Order (Dex/Arc Path)
- 1Vigor to 30 immediately. You die constantly at low Vigor. Nothing else matters if you're one-shot. Hit this before anything else.
- 2Dexterity to 30. Gets your weapon damage up fast and makes the Uchigatana feel strong. Add Endurance as needed to medium roll (under 70% equip load).
- 3Arcane to 40, Dexterity to 40. Mid-game. This is when bleed really starts to feel oppressive. Apply Blood affinity to your weapon at this point if you haven't already.
- 4Vigor to 40–50, Arcane to 50, Dexterity to 48. Endgame stats. At this point consider Faith to 15 for Flame, Grant Me Strength.
- 5Faith to 25 (optional but recommended). After Arcane 50 and Dex ~45, the marginal damage from more Dex/Arc is low. 25 Faith unlocks Golden Vow (+15% damage). Often more efficient.
Weapons
Every weapon listed here works across multiple stages. The Uchigatana can genuinely carry you to the final boss. Use the tier ratings to understand priority, not necessity.
Tier S — Endgame Powerhouses
The definitive bleed katana. Built-in Corpse Piler skill chains 5 hits with fire + physical damage, bleed buildup per hit, and superior range over any standard katana attack. Two activations frequently procs Hemorrhage twice. Even after the 1.06 nerf it remains dominant.
Bleed 73Arc ScalingDex Scaling
Requirements: 12 Str, 18 Dex, 20 Arc
Underrated monster. The running heavy attack hits four times, triggering Hemorrhage almost instantly. With Blood affinity and Seppuku applied, this might be the highest single-target bleed DPS in the game. Requires a detour to Altus Plateau.
High Buildup22 Dex Req
Requirements: 17 Str, 22 Dex
Tier A — Core Build Weapons
Your starting weapon as Samurai and the backbone of the build from level 1 through endgame. Fast, reliable, and with Blood affinity + Seppuku it procs Hemorrhage in 3-4 hits. A second copy exists in Deathtouched Catacombs for powerstancing.
StarterBleed 45
The longest katana in the game. Same moveset as Uchigatana but with spear-like range. Excellent powerstance partner for the Uchi. Works superbly with Seppuku or Piercing Fang for shield-breaking. Strong PvP pick for rollcatching.
Superior RangeBleed 45
Wildly underrated. Has one of the most damaging Ashes of War in the game (Bloodblade Dance) — a spinning multi-hit that triggers Hemorrhage almost instantly. Arcane scaling. Requires completing Yura's questline but is worth the effort.
Arc ScalingVery High Buildup
Best early-game arcane bleed weapon. The unique skill fires blood bolts at range, applying bleed buildup without closing distance. Outstanding for big, dangerous bosses. A natural off-hand option throughout the game alongside katanas.
Early GameArc Scaling
Requirements: 5 Str, 13 Dex, 13 Arc
Tier B — Honourable Mentions
Innate bleed + powerful Bloodhound's Finesse skill (jump back + slash). Great early-mid option if you want a heavier weapon. Doesn't benefit from Arcane as much as katanas.
Mohg's own weapon. AoE Bloodboon Ritual skill melts groups and most bosses. Incredible Arcane scaling. Very hard to acquire (requires reaching Moghwyn Palace) but devastating in the right hands.
Dual-wielded with Seppuku is arguably the absolute highest DPS bleed build in the game. One copy per playthrough means you need NG+ for this — but if you have two, this clears everything absurdly fast.
Ashes of War
Priority Acquisitions
The single most important Ash of War in this build. Stabs the weapon into your own body, applying a blood buff that dramatically increases the weapon's bleed buildup for a limited duration and adds some extra damage. Always apply before tough fights. Reapply when the buff fades.
Note: it was nerfed in patch 1.06 — the buff duration and buildup bonus were reduced. It is still excellent and mandatory. Just don't expect the pre-nerf absurdity.
Outstanding early-game option. A wide fire+blood arc that deals decent damage and applies bleed. Great on Uchigatana from very early in the game. Falls off compared to Seppuku but carries you through mid-game comfortably.
The broken dodge. Grants significantly more invulnerability frames than a normal roll, travels further, and makes you nearly untouchable at the cost of FP. Exceptional on daggers (Reduvia) or even an off-hand weapon. Game-warping for difficult fights.
The Samurai's signature starting Ash. Excellent poise damage (katanas are otherwise weak for stance-breaking). The heavy version has tremendous burst. Crucially, it is a neutral skill that allows weapon enchantments (like Bloodflame Blade) to be applied on top. Worth keeping on one weapon slot.
Talismans
Core Four (Rivers of Blood / Dex-Arc Build)
Situational Swaps
Armour
Armor choice matters for two things: equip load (must stay under 70% of max for medium roll — the sweet spot for this build) and the specific helmet slot, where two pieces have direct offensive synergy.
Helmet Priority
| Helmet | Bonus | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| White Mask | +10% attack rating for 20 seconds when blood loss occurs nearby | Best in slot for min-maxing. This procs constantly and stacks with Lord of Blood's Exultation for a combined ~32% attack bonus window. |
| Okina Mask | +3 Dexterity (passive) | Solid alternative and fits the samurai aesthetic. Free stat boost — takes your effective Dex to 51 if you're at 48. Slight visual bonus over the White Mask. |
| Land of Reeds Helm | No special bonus | Starting helmet. Balanced protection. Fine for early game but replace as soon as you find White Mask or Okina Mask. |
Body Armour Options
Dropped after completing Yura's questline. Exceptional visual cohesion with the katana build. Light-medium weight with decent protection. The authentic endgame Samurai look.
+10% jump attack damage. Chest piece only. Extremely strong if you're using jump attacks as your primary bleed-stacking method. Pairs with Claw Talisman for +25% total jump attack bonus.
Starting armour. Perfectly viable. Good weight-to-protection ratio and excellent samurai aesthetic. No shame in wearing this to the end — many players do.
Very light. Chest piece muffles footsteps. Good for aggressive, mobile builds where you want maximum weight budget for talismans. Clean aesthetic.
Buffs & Incantations
Essential Incantations
| Incantation | Req | Effect | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flame, Grant Me Strength | Faith 15 | +15% physical & fire attack for 30 seconds | Does not scale with Faith — same at 15 Faith as at 99. Rivers of Blood deals both fire and physical, so this benefits every single hit. Use any Seal. |
| Golden Vow | Faith 25 | +15% attack and defence for 80 seconds | After your Dex and Arcane are softcapped (~45/50), 10 more points into Faith for this outperforms 10 more points into Dex or Arc in terms of DPS. Stacks with Flame, Grant Me Strength. |
| Bloodflame Blade | Faith 10, Arc 10 | Coats weapon in fire, adds bleed buildup | Applies to any weapon, including those that don't normally bleed. Great on an Unsheathe katana — adds bleed AND fire to a normally clean strike. Use Dragon Communion Seal. |
| Swarm of Flies | Faith 11, Arc 16 | Ranged blood flies cloud — procs bleed at distance | Excellent opener for boss fights. Throws bleed buildup on an enemy before you even close distance. Synergises perfectly with Arcane investment. |
Flask of Wondrous Physick — Best Combos
Thorny Cracked Tear — increases damage with consecutive attacks (directly synergises with Corpse Piler's 5-hit string)
Greenburst Crystal Tear — faster stamina recovery for the duration, allowing longer attack windows
Thorny Cracked Tear — same damage stacking benefit
Stonebarb Cracked Tear — makes it easier to break enemy stance/poise, opening critical opportunities alongside bleed procs
Pre-Fight Buff Sequence
Combat Guide
Core Principles
- ▲Maintain pressure — bleed buildup decays. If you stop hitting an enemy for several seconds, their blood loss buildup gauge resets partway. You need to keep attacking. This means reading enemy animations for safe openings, not just trading.
- ▲Preemptive Corpse Piler. The first swing of Corpse Piler is slow. Start the animation before the enemy enters range — the first hit will miss, but you'll be deep into the faster second combo by the time they arrive. Hitting two swings often procs Hemorrhage immediately.
- ▲Use Lord of Blood's Exultation windows. After Hemorrhage procs, you have 20 seconds of +20% attack. Unleash your heaviest combos in this window. Then re-establish bleed for the next proc before the buff expires.
- ▲Against large enemies: hug the chest. Large bosses have wide arm and tail sweeps but slow body turns. Get in close to their chest/stomach and attack upward — most of their swings will miss while you connect freely.
- ▲No poise, no staggers from bleed attacks. You don't stagger enemies with bleed weapons. The Hemorrhage proc causes a brief interrupt, but during the combo itself you can be hit. Time your runs in and dodge out before committing to full strings if in doubt.
Powerstancing Mechanics (Dual Katana)
To powerstance, equip the same weapon type (katana + katana) in both hands. Your L1 button now executes a dual-wield attack — hitting with both weapons simultaneously. This doubles your bleed buildup per swing and makes Hemorrhage procs happen in 2-3 hits. The tradeoff is stamina cost per attack is higher.
Spirit Ash Recommendations
| Ash | Why |
|---|---|
| Black Knife Tiche | Best in slot for boss fights. High damage, extremely mobile, rarely dies, doesn't need to be a tank. Obtained from Night's Sacred Ground in Ringleader's Evergaol (Mountaintops of Giants). |
| Mimic Tear | Creates an exact clone of your loadout — including bleed procs. Two of you spamming Corpse Piler is unhinged. Requires Larval Tear to upgrade and is found in Nokron, Eternal City. |
| Bloodhound Knight Floh | Fast, aggressive, applies bleed itself. Creates additional blood loss triggers that keep your Lord of Blood's Exultation active. Good budget option. |
Acquisition Route
Follow this order to have the right items at the right time. Nothing here requires rushing — this is the natural exploration order of the game with deliberate detours.
Boss Notes
Not every boss in Elden Ring is susceptible to bleed. Know this before going in.
- Elden Beast — IMMUNE. Switch to pure physical/magic for this fight.
- Malenia, Blade of Miquella — Weak to bleed despite being the bleed boss. Rivers of Blood Corpse Piler is still one of the best strategies.
- Commander Niall — Immune to bleed.
- Maliketh — High resistance, not immune. Still viable but slow procs.
- Radagon — Susceptible. Bleed + fire damage from Rivers of Blood hits both damage types well.
- Morgott — Susceptible. Good bleed target.
- Rykard — Take Serpent-Hunter (provided in arena) but bleed works on him regardless.
- Placidusax — High resistance. Still viable but consider weapon swap.
- Margit / Godrick — Both highly susceptible. Great for testing the build.
- Most field bosses, dungeon bosses — Highly susceptible. Bleed dominates open-world content.
Malenia Strategy (Rivers of Blood)
Rivers of Blood Corpse Piler became famous specifically because of Malenia. She is designed around bleed — her healing on hit is difficult to counteract — but the trick is: Corpse Piler's range lets you initiate from mid-range, bypassing her aggressive combo starters. Start the Corpse Piler animation just before she closes, catching the faster portion of the combo. Two activations deals two Hemorrhage procs and often kills her before she can heal more than once. Keep Black Knife Tiche alive as long as possible to split her attention.
Shadow of the Erdtree
The bleed build remains one of the strongest archetypes in the DLC — arguably stronger than in the base game. The DLC introduces new weapons with innate bleed, higher-scaling Arcane gear, and enemies with substantial HP pools that make the percentage-based Hemorrhage mechanic even more potent.
DLC Weapons Worth Grabbing
A holy-bleed hybrid twinblade with superb Arcane scaling. Requires a Faith investment to unlock its full potential but rewards it with exceptional damage. The running heavy attack pattern makes it a bleed machine comparable to the Godskin Peeler.
Unique Ash of War with exceptional backstep and attack combo. Can be paired with Blood affinity for an aggressive, mobile off-hand that constantly ticks bleed buildup. Excellent with the Rivers of Blood main-hand setup.
A DLC katana that deals fire+bleed damage and scales well with Arcane. A natural upgrade path from the Uchigatana mid-DLC if you want something fresh. Bleed buildup is solid and the fire damage adds utility against resistant enemies.
DLC Boss Notes
Messmer the Impaler — Highly susceptible to bleed. His phase two adds delay animations designed to bait your combo timing. Wait for his combos to fully resolve before initiating Corpse Piler. Rivers of Blood mid-range initiations are particularly effective here. Two full procs typically ends phase one.
Romina, Saint of the Bud — Apply Seppuku before the fight and lead with Swarm of Flies for immediate buildup. She has wide sweep attacks but clear recovery windows. Her rot attacks can be avoided by staying close — the wide arc misses at melee range. Two Hemorrhage procs per phase is achievable with the classic Dex/Arc setup.
Quick Tips & Reference
Blood affinity adds both Arcane scaling AND increases blood loss buildup. Occult can match it in raw AR on some weapons but never beats it for bleed proc speed. Default to Blood unless testing proves otherwise.
Apply Seppuku immediately before entering a boss fight, never mid-combat. The animation leaves you vulnerable. Budget ~30 seconds of uptime per application and reapply when the buff fades if the boss still lives.
Blood loss buildup on enemies decays if you stop attacking for a few seconds. You must keep hitting. Read enemy animations for safe openings rather than waiting — this build punishes passivity.
Jump attacks deal excellent stance damage and apply solid bleed. With Claw Talisman (+15%) and Raptor's Black Feathers (+10%), jump attacks become a 25% bonus damage option — strong for mid-game before Seppuku.
The first hit of Corpse Piler is slow. Start the animation before the boss closes distance — you'll miss the first hit but land the faster follow-ups. Two activations typically procs Hemorrhage twice on a boss.
Get in close to the chest of large enemies. Most of their arm and tail sweeps will miss entirely while you connect freely with katana attacks. This is especially effective on Dragon bosses.
White Mask (+10% attack when blood loss occurs nearby) stacks with Lord of Blood's Exultation (+20%). After a Hemorrhage proc you have a combined ~32% attack bonus window — unleash your heaviest combos immediately.
After ~45 Dexterity, invest in Arcane first. It simultaneously raises weapon AR and blood loss buildup value. If you hit Arcane 50 and have Faith 15, consider Golden Vow (Faith 25) over further Dex — it often outperforms additional stat points.
Elden Beast is fully immune to bleed. For this fight, rely on raw weapon AR and your buff stack (Flame Grant Me Strength + Golden Vow). Rivers of Blood's fire + physical portions still deal damage — just no Hemorrhage procs.
